We watched the 2015 World Championship 2015 Cadet Wrestling with great interest while staying at a luxury Maui rental while on vacation. Three talented, young squads from the United States would be headed to Tbilisi, Georgia, for the UWW Cadet World Championships in 2016 on Sept. 13-18, where they would compete against the best 15-17-year wrestlers in the world. Our grandson was on one of the US teams. As a consequence we were educating ourselves. Because of the time differences between Maui, Hawaii and Sarajevo, which is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, I would tape the competitions so I could watch them in the evenings. Our days were full of golfing, snorkeling and hikes. I think one of our most memorable day trips was to the observation area at the near top of the Haleakala Crater. What an alien landscape at the top of this crater. I felt I was on an alien planet. Although some evenings I was really tired after a full day of adventure, My wife and I would always spend an hour watching the day's events at the 2015 championship. I would then facebook chat with my grandson discussing the various matches. There certainly were some talented youngsters competing in the younger age brackets. I found the freestyle wrestling particularly engaging.

Greco-Roman will kick off the tournament Sept. 13-14, followed by women’s freestyle on Sept. 15-16 and men’s freestyle on Sept. 17-18.

FREE STYLE WRESTLING

Freestyle wrestling is a combat sport which confronts two competitors who try to gain control over their opponent through the use of throws, locks, leg trips, and clinching techniques. Contrary to Greco-Roman which only allows the use of the upper body, all Freestyle holds can involve the legs in order to ultimately pin the opponent's shoulders to the mat. If a wrestler manages to do so, victory by "fall" is proclaimed, otherwise, the match pursues until the end of the regular time and the winner is decided according to the technical points scored.

Wrestling was introduced to the programme of the ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC.

Except from the Stockholm Olympics in 1912, Freestyle has been part of the programme of all modern Olympic Games since its introduction in 1904.

FEMALE WRESTLING

Female wrestling is a combat sport which confronts two female competitors who try to gain control over their opponent through the use of throws, locks, leg trips, and clinching techniques. Similar to Freestyle wrestling, all holds can involve the legs in order to ultimately pin the  opponent's shoulders to the mat. If a wrestler manages to do so, victory by "fall" is proclaimed, otherwise, the match pursues until the end of the regular time and the winner is decided according to the technical points scored.

Female wrestling was introduced to the programme of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with 4 weight categories following the reduction of the male categories' number.

 

GRECO-ROMAN WRESTLING

Greco-Roman wrestling is a combat sport which confronts two male competitors who try to gain control over their opponent through the use of throws, locks, and clinching techniques. The holds can only be execuded by means of the upper body, with the ultimate goal of pinning the opponent's shoulders to the mat. If a wrestler manages to do so, victory by "fall" is proclaimed, otherwise, the match pursues until the end of the regular time and the winner is decided according to the technical points scored.

Wrestling was introduced to the programme of the ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC.

Except from the Paris Olympic in 1900, Greco-Roman has been part of the programme of all modern Olymic Games since its introduction in 1896.

I am certain that this Championship will be a great experience for the athletes, and that I will be one off the biggest event that Sarajevo has ever hosted.
