We watched the 2015 World Championship 2015 Cadet Wrestling with great interest while staying at a luxury Maui rental while on vacation. Three talented, young squads from the United States would be headed to Tbilisi, Georgia, for the UWW Cadet World Championships in 2016 on Sept. 13-18, where they would compete against the best 15-17-year wrestlers in the world. Our grandson was on one of the US teams. As a consequence we were educating ourselves. Because of the time differences between Maui, Hawaii and Sarajevo, which is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, I would tape the competitions so I could watch them in the evenings. Our days were full of golfing, snorkeling and hikes. My wife was especially eager to try out her new womens golf clubs - I had a new set shipped to Maui as a surprise. Her favorite course is on this island where golfing is just one of many activities we enjoyed. I think one of our most memorable day trips was to the observation area at the near top of the Haleakala Crater. What an alien landscape at the top of this crater. I felt I was on an alien planet. Although some evenings I was really tired after a full day of adventure, My wife and I would always spend an hour watching the day's events at the 2015 championship. I would then facebook chat with my grandson discussing the various matches. There certainly were some talented youngsters competing in the younger age brackets. I found the freestyle wrestling particularly engaging.
Greco-Roman will kick off the tournament Sept. 13-14, followed by women’s freestyle on Sept. 15-16 and men’s freestyle on Sept. 17-18.

FREE STYLE WRESTLING
Freestyle wrestling is a combat sport which confronts two competitors who try to gain control over their opponent through the use of throws, locks, leg trips, and clinching techniques. Contrary to Greco-Roman which only allows the use of the upper body, all Freestyle holds can involve the legs in order to ultimately pin the opponent's shoulders to the mat. If a wrestler manages to do so, victory by "fall" is proclaimed, otherwise, the match pursues until the end of the regular time and the winner is decided according to the technical points scored.
Wrestling was introduced to the programme of the ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC.
Except from the Stockholm Olympics in 1912, Freestyle has been part of the programme of all modern Olympic Games since its introduction in 1904.
GOLD FS - 69 kg: S. NANIEV (RUS) df. I. ABDULLAYEV (AZE) by TF, 13-0
FEMALE WRESTLING

Female wrestling is a combat sport which confronts two female competitors who try to gain control over their opponent through the use of throws, locks, leg trips, and clinching techniques. Similar to Freestyle wrestling, all holds can involve the legs in order to ultimately pin the opponent's shoulders to the mat. If a wrestler manages to do so, victory by "fall" is proclaimed, otherwise, the match pursues until the end of the regular time and the winner is decided according to the technical points scored.
Female wrestling was introduced to the programme of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with 4 weight categories following the reduction of the male categories' number.
GRECO-ROMAN WRESTLING

Greco-Roman wrestling is a combat sport which confronts two male competitors who try to gain control over their opponent through the use of throws, locks, and clinching techniques. The holds can only be execuded by means of the upper body, with the ultimate goal of pinning the opponent's shoulders to the mat. If a wrestler manages to do so, victory by "fall" is proclaimed, otherwise, the match pursues until the end of the regular time and the winner is decided according to the technical points scored.
Wrestling was introduced to the programme of the ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC.
Except from the Paris Olympic in 1900, Greco-Roman has been part of the programme of all modern Olymic Games since its introduction in 1896.

More Background On WorldChampionship2015Cadet.com
WorldChampionship2015Cadet.com was created as the official informational and archival website dedicated to the 2015 Cadet World Wrestling Championships, an international sporting event organized under the authority of United World Wrestling (UWW). The championship took place in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, from August 25 to August 30, 2015, and brought together elite wrestlers aged 15–17 from across the globe.
The website functioned as both a pre-event promotional portal and a post-event historical record, offering visitors official schedules, competition details, ceremonial messages, and background information on wrestling disciplines. In the years following the tournament, the site transitioned into a static archival resource that preserved the atmosphere, structure, and spirit of the event.
Unlike commercial sports websites, WorldChampionship2015Cadet.com was created with a single-purpose mission: to document and support a major international youth wrestling championship, reflecting the Olympic ideals of sportsmanship, cultural exchange, and competitive excellence.
Ownership and Organizational Background
The website was developed and managed in conjunction with the Wrestling Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, operating in coordination with United World Wrestling (UWW), the global governing body for amateur wrestling.
Organizational leadership credited on the site included:
-
Adil Osmanović, Minister of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina
-
Adis Osmanović, President of the Wrestling Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina
-
Sanel Bečković, General Manager of the World Cadet Championship
-
Željko Trajković, Promoter of the World Wrestling Cadet Championship
These figures represented both governmental and sporting authorities, reflecting the championship’s status as a nationally supported international event rather than a private or commercial endeavor.
The site itself appears to have been created as a temporary official domain, designed to exist primarily during the championship period and preserved afterward as a digital record.
Location and Geographic Significance
The 2015 Cadet World Wrestling Championships were held in Sarajevo, the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Sarajevo’s selection as host city carried symbolic and practical significance:
-
It represented Bosnia and Herzegovina’s growing role in international sports diplomacy.
-
The city had successfully rebuilt and modernized its sports infrastructure following the conflicts of the 1990s.
-
Sarajevo had prior experience hosting international sporting events.
-
Its geographic position made it accessible to European, Asian, and Middle Eastern delegations.
The championship also served as an opportunity to present Sarajevo as a welcoming, culturally rich destination, blending Olympic-level competition with regional hospitality.
Event Overview and Competition Structure
The World Cadet Wrestling Championships are sanctioned by United World Wrestling and are considered the highest level of international competition for athletes aged 15–17.
The 2015 championship featured three major wrestling styles:
Freestyle Wrestling
A dynamic discipline allowing both upper- and lower-body attacks, leg trips, throws, and takedowns.
Greco-Roman Wrestling
A classical style restricting holds to the upper body only, emphasizing strength, positioning, and explosive throws.
Women’s Freestyle Wrestling
A discipline mirroring freestyle rules that has rapidly grown in international participation.
The competition ran across six days, with structured sessions including:
-
Qualification rounds
-
Repechage rounds
-
Medal matches
-
Award ceremonies
-
Official weigh-ins
-
Opening ceremonies
Weight classes spanned multiple youth divisions, with medals awarded in each category.
Historical Context and Importance
The cadet level is a critical developmental stage in international wrestling. Many Olympic and World Championship medalists first gained international experience at this level.
The 2015 event was particularly notable for:
-
High participation from emerging wrestling nations
-
Strong representation from Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East
-
Early appearances by future elite competitors
-
A growing emphasis on women’s wrestling
The Sarajevo championship followed the long tradition of UWW events designed to cultivate sportsmanship, technical skill, and international camaraderie.

This reflection highlights how international youth sports connect families across borders and generations, emphasizing growth and inspiration beyond medals.

Beyond results and schedules, it tells a broader story of international cooperation, youth development, and the enduring power of sport to unite communities across borders.
